['praɪməri, englisch] die, -/...ries, Primary Election [-ɪ'lekʃn], Vorwahl, das in den einzelnen Bundesstaaten der USA vorgesehene Verfahren zur innenparteilichen Wahl der Kandidaten einer Partei für öffentliche Ämter und Parlamentssitze. Die Primaries unterliegen der einschlägigen Gesetzgebung des jeweiligen Staates. In vielen Staaten werden auch die Delegierten zu den nationalen Parteikonventen, denen die Nominierung des Präsidentschaftskandidaten obliegt, durch Presidential Primaries bestimmt. - Im Hinblick auf den Abstimmungsmodus gibt es zwei Grundtypen der Primaries mit vielen Variationen: Bei der Open Primary braucht der Abstimmende keine Parteizugehörigkeit nachzuweisen. Es kann sich jeder Wahlberechtigte an dieser Primary jeder Partei beteiligen. An der Closed Primary dürfen sich nur erklärte Anhänger und Mitglieder der Partei beteiligen, die eine Primary durchführt.
